Benjamin West

Anglo-American painter of the eighteenth century, a pioneer of Neoclassicism and a key figure in British history painting, eventually serving as President of the Royal Academy. He is remembered for renewing the historical genre by depicting contemporary scenes with figures dressed in the fashion of his own time, rather than in ancient costume.
