Asher Brown Durand

American painter of the nineteenth century, a central figure of the Hudson River School, the pioneering landscape movement in the United States. He is remembered for his detailed, luminous landscapes that extolled the nation's natural scenery as an expression of national identity. Before devoting himself to painting, he was a renowned engraver.
