Arthur Devis

English painter of the eighteenth century, specialising in conversation pieces of the minor nobility and rural gentry. His compositions, featuring small figures in interiors or landscapes, document in detail the domestic life of the Georgian era. He was a forerunner of later painters such as Gainsborough in this genre.
