Ammi Phillips

American folk-art portrait painter (1788-1865), active in New York and Connecticut. He travelled through various towns painting portraits of rural families in a flat, direct style characteristic of American primitivist art. He is one of the most highly valued figures in nineteenth-century American folk portraiture.
