Alexandre Cabanel
French painter of the nineteenth century, a leading representative of academicism and a favourite of the official salons during the Second Empire. He is remembered for his mythological and historical compositions of polished and idealised execution, which embodied official taste in contrast to the more innovative currents of his time.
