Adam Elsheimer
German painter of the seventeenth century, active mainly in Rome, where he developed a small-format style on copper that combined landscape, nocturnal light and religious or mythological scenes. His treatment of light notably influenced later painters such as Rubens and Rembrandt, despite the scarcity of his surviving output.
